Lamecha Girma

Ethiopia

Biography

Born in Assela, Ethiopia young Girma discovered athletics at an early age. Once his primary school teachers noticed his unusual size and power in sport; he was urged to head to the capital city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to train alongside more developed athletes. He moved to the Youth Sport Academy in Addis Ababa to be coached by Teshome Kebede, the national coach for the steeplechase, and to train alongside Getnet Wale and a couple of other promising middle-distance runners.

Now a world silver medalist, Girma is no longer just a young child from Assela. He is one of the favorites for a medal in the Steeplechase in the coming Olympic Games in Tokyo. He could be the first ever Ethiopian to win a Gold Medal in the Steeplechase.

Girma was shortlisted for the Rising Star award at last year’s World Athletics Awards in Monaco, a great honor for him. He did not win that award but did go on to win the Young Athlete of the Year award from the Confederation of African Athletic; for his role in raising the standards of Ethiopian steeple-chasing.
