In the fourth place slot was Teyba Erkesso in a time of 67:41, a new personal best for her just one month after her tremendous win and new course record at the Houston Marathon. Only seconds after her was the pre race favorite to defend her RAK Half title Dire Tune (67:58), who finished fifth.

Tilahun Regassa falls victim to Typhoid

Zayed International Half Marathon Champion, Tilahun Regassa, was hospitalized on February 11th after suffering from symptoms associated with Typhoid in his home country of Ethiopia.

He has been treated, placed on the proper medications, and discharged from the hospital.

Tilahun along with his coach Haji Adilo both feel that running in his next scheduled race, the RAK Half Maratho this upcoming week, would be a bad decision and one that could hamper his future success and races in 2010.

ESMI wishes Tilahun a speedy recovery!

Mamitu Daska Takes Dubai Marathon Crown

On a humid day in Dubai, Mamitu Daska pulled away from a talented field of runners to set for herself a new personal best and collect a Marathon crown.

Daska, improved on her previous personal best from the 2009 real-Berlin Marathon, by over two mintues, and established herself among some of the top female marathoners in the world.

Mamitu showed in this race the kind of heart and determination it takes to be a champion; as she became violently sick in the finishing straight, yet held onto her lead and captured victory only to fall to the ground after the finish in complete exhaustion. But in true champion fashion she quickly recovered, and after being evaluated and cleared, she quickly got back to celebrating her win and is looking forward to her next race.

Congratulations to Mamitu for an outstanding victory.

The King of New York

Only a few months after dominating the field and setting the Central Park course record, Tadese Tola came back to New York City, to defend his Half Marathon title. The field this year in the New York City Half Marathon presented by NIKE was loaded with tremendous talent. Tola could have cared less who he was running against. For most of the course Tola was running by himself, over a full minute ahead of the next closest challenger. Tola now has established himself as the "King of New York", in the running world, and placed his name in New York's running history forever.

Also, is the Half Marathon field was Mamitu Daska. Mamitu is continuing to build her resume with great finishes and is having a great year. Mamitu finished 2nd, in a very impressive women's field that included some of the best female marathoners in the world. Mamitu has been collecting top finishes this year like they were baseball cards. Mamitu is a wonderfully talented runner and is set to collect as many wins as she can in the rest of her career.

ESMI Dominates at Falmouth

Again and Again, time after time, Tilahun Regassa proves to his rivals that he is a World Class force to be reckoned with. He again powered away from another very strong international field to easily win one of America's most prestigious road races, The Falmouth 7 Miler. Regassa continues to amaze and shows that he is no rookie anymore. The running world is now on its heels as Regassa moves his way to the forefront of our sport.

Along with Regassa's dominance in Falmouth, Mamitu Daska put on quite a display of athleticism on her own. Mamitu who like her teammate Regassa, also took home her own 1st place title. Mamitu wowed the spectators in Falmouth as she broke away from her competition around mile 3 and never looked back. Mamitu and Ragassa both displayed the type of outstanding performances that the ESMI team has become accustomed to seeing from its athletes.

Rounding out the ESMI field was Karim ElMabchour. Karim, a talented Moroccan, yet US based runner provided the veteran advice, and teamwork that helped to push Regassa and Mamitu to the top of their fields. Karim ran well on Sunday, and took the beautiful scenic run in Cape Cod for all it was worth.

Congratulations to all of these talented athletes, that made this years Falmouth Road Race one to remember for years to come.

Ndiku Takes Gold with only One Shoe

On Thursday, July 30th, at the African Junior Championships, Fans and spectators alike were not ready for the sheer display of raw passion that they were about to see until in a moments notice it happened.

Jonathan Ndiku was barely 800m into what was to become an epic 3,000m SC race; when his spike flew off, and left him running on one foot. Unlike most other athletes who would pull up and stop; to either avoid injury or make excuses for themselves, Mr. Ndiku pushed on and displayed the true pride and passion that the sport of running loves to see. When asked how he felt after he lost his spike, and why he continued to push so hard Johnathan replied simply, "I didn't want to let my country down."

Th amount pain and hurt he ran with that day, was a small price to pay to ensure his country was proud of their native son. To the entire World that day Johnathan reminded us all that no one is bigger than the sport, and no one is bigger than where they call home.

Tola Going For Record at Crazy 8s

Tadesa Tola did it in Manhatten. Now he wants to do it again in Kingsport. Tola, the 21-year old Ethiopian took down the Central Park course record in impressive style earlier this year, running 27:48 at the Healthy Kidney 10K. He now has his eyes set on the 8K world record at the Indian Path Medical Center & SunTrust Bank Crazy 8s 8K Run in Kingsport on July 11th.

“Tola is going after the record, and I think he is ready for it,” said his agent Hussein Makke in an email to Crazy 8s organizers. “He had a very good month of training. If the weather cooperates, and if the pacemakers do their job, his chances are better than 90%.”

Tola, like so many before him, will be chasing Peter Githuka’s 22:03 world mark set in Kingsport in 1996. If he wins the race and breaks the record he will not only collect the Gastroenterology Associates $5000 Dash For The Gold, but also The Regional Eye Center $10,000 World Record Bonus.

“It’s going to be exciting,” said Elite Athlete Recruiter Hank Brown. “If we can get some cool weather like we’ve had the past few days, I’d say the record will be in serious jeopardy.”

Tola’s credentials would certainly suggest that he is well within range of Githuka’s record. In addition to his sparkling Central Park performance, he has run 27:04 on the track, and represented Ethiopia in the World Championships in Osaka, Japan. He won the very prestigious Falmouth Road Race in 2008, and finished 2nd at the Bolder Boulder 10K earlier this year.

Challenging Tola is a familiar face to Kingsport. Karim Elmabchour of Morocco will be making his 4th straight appearance on the world famous figure-8 course. He finished 3rd in 2006, 2nd in 2007 (22:26), and 5th last year. He knows the course, and is always tough at the end.

“Yeah, we never talk about Karim much,” said Brown. “But you look up, and there he is entering the stadium with the leaders. This might be his year.”

Two for Tune? Chasing her own One Hour World record and the 20,000m standard

Last year the meeting began with Dire Tune picking up where Haile Gebrselassie left off the year before, with a successful assault on the World record in the One Hour Run. The 24-year-old covered 18,517m in 60 minutes, adding 177m to the previous record of 18,340m set by Tegla Loroupe 10 years earlier. Tune returns this year to add to that mark, but will also forge onwards in an effort to take another of Loroupe’s records, the fabled Kenyan’s 20,000m mark of 1:05:26.6 set in 2000. Three pacesetters will assist in the bid which begins at 16:20 local time, an hour and a half prior to the main programme.
